As Panama's breathtaking landscapes continue to captivate, drones are increasingly favored for both personal enjoyment and commercial endeavors. Operating a drone in Panama is permissible, provided you adhere to the regulations in place. Below is the 2024 updated version of our initial blog post.
In recent years, the use of drones has soared in popularity worldwide, and Panama is no exception. With its stunning landscapes and growing interest in aerial photography and videography, drones have become an essential tool for both personal and commercial use. However, before taking to the skies, it's crucial to understand and comply with the regulations set forth by the Civil Aeronautical Authority (AAC) in Panama.
Training and Registration
The first step in operating a drone in Panama is to ensure you have the necessary skills. If additional training is required, it's essential to undergo instruction to operate the equipment safely and effectively.
Once you're confident in your abilities, the next step is to register your drone with the AAC. This can be done by visiting the AAC website and accessing the DRONES section, where you'll find the registration form. It's important to bring this form, along with your physical equipment, to your registration appointment at Building 805 of the AAC.
During the registration process, you'll receive a sticker with a unique number for your Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), which must be affixed to your drone.
Compliance with Regulations
Panama's drone regulations are outlined in Resolution 120, Aeronautical Standard AAC/DSA/DG/01/16. It's essential to familiarize yourself with these regulations to ensure compliance while operating your drone.
One of the key regulations is obtaining an operating license for your drone, particularly if you intend to use it for commercial purposes. This license can be acquired by submitting a letter to Captain Abdiel Fenández, Acting Director of Air Safety at the AAC (killingbeckk@gmail.com with CC to kerima.killingbeck@aeronautica.go.pa).
Upon approval, you'll be granted permission to operate your drone legally.
Special Considerations
Certain areas in Panama may have specific regulations or restrictions regarding drone operations. For example, if you plan to fly over the Cinta Costera or Casco Antiguo, you must notify the relevant authorities in advance.
Additionally, flying over restricted areas, particularly those monitored by DJI equipment, requires special attention and may have longer processing times for approval. You can contact DJI at lysafe@dji.com;
Conclusion
As the popularity of drones continues to rise in Panama, operators need to understand and adhere to the regulations set forth by the Civil Aeronautical Authority. By completing the necessary training, registering your drone, and complying with regulations, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of Panama's landscapes while ensuring the safety of your operations and respecting local regulations
